Senator Aquilino Pimentel III on Friday assured the public that the Senate would be independent despite that majority of the leading senatorial candidates were endorsed by the Duterte administration.
“Huwag kayong mag-alala kasi kahit na itinaas ang kamay namin ni Presidente Duterte, inendorse kami, wala naman kaming usapan. Hindi naman niya kami sinabihan na ‘oh kailangan, yes men ko kayo.’ Wala pong usapan,” Pimentel said in an interview on Dobol B sa News TV.
“Even at this time, pagtaas namin ng kamay at to take our oath as senators na ang aming loyalty ay sa Constitution at sa taong-bayan,” he added.
Pimentel is part of Duterte’s PDP-Laban.
As of the latest partial, official count of the National Board of Canvassers, composed of the Commission on Elections chairman and commissioners, Pimentel ranked 10th with 11,283,357 votes.
Earlier, Senate President Vicente Sotto III allayed fears that with the current composition of the Magic 12 in the 2019 senatorial race, the Senate will become a “rubber stamp” of the administration.
