Hit Duterte campaign strategy backfired on Otso Diretso – political analyst

They trained their guns on President Rodrigo Duterte, but that campaign strategy backfired, and triggered a “political suicide” that wiped out the opposition Otso Diretso senatorial team during the May 13 mid-term elections.

Popular political analyst Ramon Casiple aired this observation after all eight candidates of the Liberal Party-backed Otso Diretso failed to get into the win column of the senatorial race, according to unofficial but nearly complete results of the polls.

Casiple, chairman of the Institute for Political and Electoral Reform (IPER), said the strategy of waging a “negative campaign” against Duterte and his chosen bets turned into a dud as the chief executive continued to ride the crest of impeccable public approval during the campaign.

Casiple, chairman of the Institute for Political and Electoral Reform (IPER), said the strategy of waging a “negative campaign” against Duterte and his chosen bets turned into a dud as the chief executive continued to ride the crest of impeccable public approval during the campaign.

On the other hand, Richard Heydarian of GMA-7 said the dominant showing of the administration bets was expected because of the chief executive’s popularity.

He said the opposition failed to acknowledge the fact that only one or two among them could compete against the well-oiled administration campaign machinery.

“Dapat nag-moblize sila on that person, spread thin ang resources nila,” said Heydarian.

Casiple said the opposition adopted a wrong campaign strategy from the very start of the campaign, and was unable to break away from it.

“Political suicide iyan, they brought it upon themselves. Ang istilo ng kampanya ay negative at ang target ay popular na may 80 percent popularity,” he said.
