‘’I am not even sure if I want to run for President, so I do not know what he (President Duterte) is talking about.’’
This was the reply of Senator Panfilo M. Lacson to President Duterte’s statement that Lacson might be harboring presidential ambitions because of his reported penchant for commenting on every issue.
‘’The Senate media and I know that the President was exaggerating when he said that I have the penchant to comment on every issue,’’ he said.
‘’Aside from my Twitter posts, I only comment on issues when asked, and not even all the time. I play ‘dedma’ (playing dead) when I am not familiar with the issue. I may not be a lawyer, but I know how to read and understand the law that I read or ask my lawyer-staff when I don’t,’’ he stressed.
‘’Having said that, the President says he is fighting corruption. I also say am on a crusade in exposing corruption in government. If we are not complementing each other in this regard, there must be a problem somewhere,’’ he added.
One issue that Lacson disagreed with President Duterte was that it was permissible for the police to accept gifts out of gratitude, or earning extra cash from video-karera.
‘’Is this not graft Mr. President? Pray tell, who is ignorant?’’ he asked.
Duterte is a lawyer and has worked as a prosecutor in Davao before becoming the Davao city mayor and later as President of the Republic after the 2016 presidential race.
Lacson, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) during the Estrada presidency, ran and lost to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in the 2004 presidential race.
